DOUBLE GOLD FOR ITALIAN GYMNAST: OLYMPIC MEDAL AND MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

From Dreamt Sketch to Olympic Reality: Maurelli's Double Gold on a Day for the Ages

Remember the childhood dreams scribbled in crayon? The ones where you, invincible, conquer your wildest aspirations? For Alessia Maurelli, rhythmic gymnast extraordinaire, one such dream transformed from a heartfelt sketch to a picture-perfect Olympic moment – and it came with a dazzling twist!

Years ago, a young Maurelli envisioned herself: splits flying, framed by the iconic Olympic rings, the Italian flag proudly displayed. Now, fast forward to Paris 2024, her third Olympic Games. The dream wasn't just a memory; it was a reality captured in professional photographs. The splits, the rings, the flag – all present and accounted for. But wait, there's more! A brand new addition glinted under the stadium lights – a sparkling diamond engagement ring adorning Maurelli's finger.

Fresh off the podium, the Italian team's bronze medal haul in the rhythmic gymnastics group-around was only the beginning of Maurelli's celebration. Her boyfriend of two years, Massimo Bertelloni, chose this momentous occasion to pop the question!

"I can't believe it," a still-stunned Maurelli confessed to Olympics.com. "This is one of the strangest, most beautiful days ever. It'll be etched in my memory forever. I'm overflowing with happiness. This ring and this medal – they're a taste of the incredible future that awaits, and I can't wait to share it with my best friends, my teammates, and now, my fiancé!"

This is a day that defies definition – a day where athletic dreams intertwined with personal triumphs. A day Alessia Maurelli will surely never forget.

2024 OLYMPICS: MEET THE ATHLETES COMPETING FOR GOLD IN THE NEWEST SPORT, BREAKING IN PARIS

Meet the Pioneers of Team USA's Breaking Squad at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Sunny Choi, Logan Edra, Jeffrey Louis, and Victor Montalvo are the B-girls and B-boys who have qualified to represent Team USA on the world stage. Breaking makes its highly anticipated debut on August 9th at the Summer Games in Paris.

"I was initially very skeptical because breaking, to me, had always been a raw and gritty street culture,” Choi, a former gymnast who discovered breaking in college, shared in a recent interview with E! News. "The Olympics seemed so refined and elegant, and breaking appeared to be the complete opposite. It has an energy that is not felt in other sports."

The International Olympic Committee, inspired by the positive reception at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, added breaking to the 2024 Summer Games. However, it won't be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, adding urgency for this year's competitors.

The women's breaking event is set for August 9th, followed by the men's on August 10th at La Concorde Urban Park. Nine judges will score the breakers in six categories: Creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity, and musicality—with creativity and performativity accounting for 60 percent of the score.

Sixteen women and sixteen men will compete in respective round-robin qualifying rounds, with the top scorers advancing to the quarterfinals. The medal rounds will feature best-of-three, minute-long head-to-head battles.

Master of Ceremonies Max Oliveira will preside over the event, where breakers will engage in improvisational battles, responding immediately to the music spun by the DJ.

"I'm really excited to represent my country, but I'm even more excited to represent my dance and my art form," Victor told the Associated Press. "We’re bringing hip-hop culture to the Olympics, along with peace, love, unity, and having fun."

Tropical Storm Debby Unleashes Deadly Wrath on North Carolina

Tropical Storm Debby Turns Deadly: Tornado and Flooding Devastate North Carolina

Tropical Storm Debby has intensified into a deadly force, claiming at least six lives after spawning a destructive tornado in North Carolina. The twister tore through Lucama, damaging homes and a school, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

The storm, which made landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane just days ago, has dumped torrential rain across the Southeast, causing widespread flooding. Rivers have overflowed, roads have become impassable, and residents have been forced to evacuate their homes. With a dangerous heatwave looming, recovery efforts are expected to be challenging.

Debby's Destructive Rampage: Death Toll Rises as Storm Unleashes Fury

Tropical Storm Debby has transformed into a relentless force of destruction, leaving a trail of devastation across the Southeast. The storm's fury has claimed at least six lives, with North Carolina bearing the brunt of its wrath.

A deadly tornado spawned by Debby tore through Wilson County, North Carolina, early Thursday, killing one person and inflicting severe damage on homes, schools, and businesses. This comes as no surprise given the storm's history of spawning multiple tornadoes throughout its destructive path. At least 11 tornadoes have been confirmed across Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

As if the threat of tornadoes weren't enough, Debby has unleashed torrential rainfall, leading to catastrophic flash flooding. Bladenboro, North Carolina, found itself isolated as floodwaters reached a staggering three feet. The National Weather Service issued a rare flash flood emergency, a stark warning of the imminent danger.

The storm's relentless march continues as it heads towards the Northeast, promising more misery for a region already reeling from recent storms. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has urged residents to prepare for a deluge, warning of potential rainfall totals exceeding 15 inches.

Debby's rampage is a stark reminder of the increasing intensity and frequency of extreme weather events fueled by climate change. As the storm churns on, communities across the region brace for impact, hoping to emerge from this ordeal with minimal loss of life and property.

Debby's Devastating Aftermath: Widespread Destruction and Looming Heat Threat

The fallout from Tropical Storm Debby continues to unfold with alarming consequences for millions across the Southeast. President Joe Biden has swiftly responded to the crisis by approving disaster declarations for Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, states that have borne the brunt of Debby's wrath. Over 700 FEMA personnel have been mobilized to support ongoing relief efforts, with search and rescue teams on high alert.

The unfolding catastrophe has reached a critical level in Georgia, where a dam in Bulloch County is on the brink of catastrophic failure due to the relentless downpours. The immediate threat of widespread flooding has forced authorities to issue evacuation warnings for downstream communities.

As if the threat of flooding wasn't enough, a dangerous heat wave is settling over the region, exacerbating recovery efforts and posing a significant health risk to residents. Heat indices are expected to soar well above 110 degrees, creating life-threatening conditions for those working outdoors or without adequate cooling.

The combined impacts of flooding, structural damage, and extreme heat underscore the immense challenges facing communities in the storm's path. As recovery efforts commence, the region braces for a long and arduous road ahead.

Debby's Legacy: A Stark Warning of Climate Change's Fury

Tropical Storm Debby's destructive rampage serves as a stark reminder of the escalating impacts of climate change. The storm, fueled by record-breaking warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico, rapidly intensified into a hurricane before making landfall, showcasing the alarming consequences of fossil fuel-driven global warming.

Debby's wrath has left communities reeling as homes are reduced to rubble, roads become impassable, and entire neighborhoods are submerged. The storm's relentless onslaught has transformed once familiar landscapes into perilous environments.

In a chilling testament to the storm's impact, a South Carolina home has been invaded by a family of alligators, turning a backyard into a reptilian refuge. Adrienne LeBlanc's unexpected encounter with her unwanted aquatic neighbors highlights the surreal and unsettling consequences of extreme weather events.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of Debby, it's clear that the challenges posed by climate change are far from over. The urgent need for sustainable solutions and climate action is more apparent than ever.

A Chilling Encounter

Adrienne LeBlanc, a 17-year veteran of Bluffton living, had never imagined her backyard transforming into an alligator wrestling arena. With a chilling sense of foreboding, she had joked to her husband the night before, "When I wake up tomorrow, that bad boy is going to be in our bedroom." Little did she know, her premonition would be eerily accurate.

While LeBlanc had weathered the storm of Hurricane Matthew in 2016, nothing could have prepared her for the unprecedented flooding caused by Debby. The state of South Carolina, unaccustomed to such intense tropical activity since Hurricane Ian's landfall in 2022 and Tropical Storm Idalia's passage in August 2023, found itself grappling with the overwhelming force of nature.
